THE Hawkesbury Highlands should be high on the list of considerations for people looking for the perfect winter escape.

A spectacular and unique paradise incorporates river flats and farming land surrounded by green rolling hills with a purple/blue mountain backdrop.

These are the foothills of the Greater Blue Mountains where historic significance and natural beauty abound.

It is a paradise of national parks and reserves surrounding fertile valleys farming fresh fruit and vegetables, Alpaca, sheep, horse and cattle grazing.

Historic buildings, art galleries and antique shops dot the landscape. As you leave the historic townships of Richmond and Windsor travelling west on the Bells Line of Road, just follow the signs and turn off to the quaint historic village of Kurrajong.

In winter, there is the smell of wood smoke and freshly ground coffee with magnificent views to Sydney.

Sassafras Creek is an architect designed cafe{aac}/restaurant, art gallery and gift shop specialising in bringing the freshly picked farm produce to you via their experienced chefs.

Carey & Co is another feature of the village. Situated in a delightful 1920s cottage, there are multiple themed rooms of women's fashion, French-inspired home wares and gorgeous gifts for babies and toddlers.

Everything here is chosen with a unique sense of style and flair and there are many treasures to be found among its huge range.

Further on Bells Line of Road is Fernbrook Gardens where one of the finest botanical artists, Elaine Musgrave, can be seen working in her studio set in beautiful gardens.

Lochiel House is just a short walk from here and is located in an 1850s building serving what promises to be some of the best food and wine you will experience.

Call in to some of the orchards now picking crisp autumn apples, oranges and chestnuts on your way up to Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens.

Hawkesbury Highlands offers a wide range of bed and breakfast accommodation.

For those who like a quiet atmosphere and the privacy of looking after themselves Glenhuntly is a perfect choice.

Two beautiful cottages set in a bushland garden just off the main road at Bilpin offer tranquillity for couples or larger family groups. If you prefer the sheer indulgence of your own three-room suite in luxurious hosted accommodation Lang-Dorn is a great choice.

This gracious home is nestled on the side of the hills with glorious views and a four-course gourmet breakfast served on the veranda to the sound of bell birds in the valley below.
